SaaS Magic Number

The SaaS Magic Number is a ratio showing yearly recurring revenue growth gained for every sales and marketing dollar spent. It indicates the level of operational efficiency of a company, as well as the sustainability of sales and marketing expenditure.

SaaS Quick Ratio

SaaS Quick Ratio measures how efficiently a SaaS company grows Monthly Recurring Revenue by comparing revenue gained through new customers and expansions against revenue lost through churn and downgrades.

Sales and Marketing to Revenue Ratio

The Sales and Marketing to Revenue Ratio represents the percentage of total revenue that a company invests in its sales and marketing activities. This metric serves as a critical indicator of how efficiently a company is acquiring and retaining customers relative to the revenue those efforts generate. It encompasses all costs associated with customer acquisition, including advertising spend, sales team compensation, marketing technology, promotional activities, trade shows, content creation, and customer relationship management systems. This ratio is particularly valuable for assessing the scalability and sustainability of a company's growth strategy. A well-optimised ratio indicates that the company is investing appropriately in revenue-generating activities without over-spending on customer acquisition, while maintaining the ability to compete effectively in its market. The metric also provides insight into a company's operational maturity and its ability to generate profitable growth over time.

Sales Cycle Length

Sales Cycle Length is the count of the number of days or months it takes on average to close a deal. This metric can be helpful when creating sales forecasts, measuring sales efficiency, and speaking with investors. It is often referred to as the Average Deal Cycle and is usually expressed in months.

Sales Qualified Leads

A Sales Qualified Lead (SQL) represents a prospect who has progressed beyond initial marketing engagement and demonstrates genuine potential for conversion. Unlike Marketing Qualified Leads (MQLs) that indicate early interest, SQLs have been vetted by sales professionals and meet specific criteria that suggest a higher likelihood of becoming a paying customer. These leads sit strategically in the middle of your sales funnel, having moved past the awareness stage but not yet reached the final purchase decision point.

Spend Lift

Spend Lift is a loyalty metric that measures the increase in customer spending between two time periods, showing whether loyalty programs or promotions are driving real revenue growth.

Subscriber Growth Rate

Subscriber Growth Rate is the percentage change in an application's subscriber base from one period to the next. It signals whether a product is gaining or losing traction. The time period can be a week, a month, a quarter, or a year.

Subscribers

Subscribers counts the number of paid or non-paid users with active, periodic access to a product or service. The metric applies to subscription-based business models including SaaS, media, telecommunications, and entertainment, and captures total access holders at a point in time regardless of payment status.

Tickets

Tickets, also called customer issues or incidents, are records of user or system-initiated requests captured in an issue tracking system. Each ticket documents a request such as a help inquiry, bug report, feature request, complaint, or automated alert, and tracks it from submission through resolution. Tickets also capture supporting detail including urgency, device information, and customer type to help teams triage and prioritize effectively.

Total Contract Value

Total Contract Value (TCV) is the full committed value of a contract across its entire term. It includes the initial purchase price plus all other contracted costs, such as recurring fees, installation charges, and ongoing maintenance or support, giving businesses a complete view of what a contract costs from start to finish.

Transaction Recency

Transaction Recency is the average number of days since a customer's last purchase, measured across all repeat buyers. It indicates how quickly customers return to make additional purchases and is most useful for businesses where repeat transactions are expected, such as e-commerce, retail, and usage-based software.

Trial Conversion Rate

Trial Conversion Rate measures the percentage of users that have converted to a paid account from a trial period. Commonly referred to as Free Trial to Paid Conversion Rate, this metric indicates product value by measuring the number of users that find enough value in the product to pay for it. Trial Conversion Rates vary based on the type of trial you use. In SaaS, the standard practice is to either have a freemium product or a free trial period that usually spans a couple weeks.
