Contribution Margin

Contribution margin is the revenue remaining after subtracting variable costs — the amount available to cover fixed costs and generate profit. It can be expressed as a total dollar amount, per unit, or as a percentage of revenue.

Conversions

Conversions represent the total number of meaningful actions (conversion events) that users take on your website or application during a specific time period. These are meaningful interactions that align with your business objectives—such as purchases, sign-ups, or requests for consultation—and indicate that a visitor has moved from passive browsing to active engagement with your brand. Think of conversions as the digital equivalent of a customer walking into your physical store and taking a desired action—whether that's making a purchase, signing up for information, or requesting a consultation.

Cost Of Goods Sold

The Cost Of Goods Sold (COGS) is the measure of direct costs incurred by a company to manufacture or deliver their product or service. Costs typically include raw material and direct labour, but this varies from business to business, depending on the products or services that are being sold. COGS is the building block to understanding Gross Margin and Gross Margin Percent.

Cost per Activated Lead

Cost per Activated Lead measures the costs involved in generating one activated lead. An activated lead is a potential customer who demonstrates intention to purchase your product.

Cost Per AI-Resolved Task

Cost Per AI-Resolved Task is the fully loaded cost to complete one task using an AI system, including compute, infrastructure, and human review expenses. Token costs alone dramatically understate true cost; human review is often the largest component.

Cost Per Click

Cost Per Click (CPC) is the price an advertiser pays a publisher each time a user clicks on an ad or link. CPC applies across search engines, social platforms, and display networks, and is the core pricing unit in Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising. Tracking CPC helps advertisers evaluate spend efficiency, set budgets, and compare performance across channels.

Cost Per Hire

Cost Per Hire (CPH) is a key recruitment metric that quantifies the total expenditure an organization incurs to hire a new employee. It provides a financial measure of the efficiency of a company's hiring process. The CPH metric is a crucial tool for human resources professionals and business leaders to budget for recruitment, justify spending, and assess the return on investment (ROI) of various hiring channels. By breaking down costs into internal and external categories, CPH offers a comprehensive overview of a company’s financial investment in attracting, sourcing, and securing talent.

Cost Per Inline Link Click

Cost Per Inline Link Click is the average amount of money spent per click on links contained in advertisements. It is calculated by dividing the total amount of money spent on ads by the total number of clicks on links within the ads and is a variation of Cost Per Click (CPC).

Cost Per Inline Post Engagement

Cost Per Inline Post Engagement is the average cost of each inline engagement with an advertisement on social media. It is calculated by dividing the total amount of money spent on ads by the total number of engagements with the ads and is a variation of Cost Per Click (CPC).

Cost Per Lead

Cost per Lead (CPL) is the average amount spent on acquiring a new lead, inclusive of all marketing channels such as paid advertising, social media campaigns, and content marketing. Cost per Lead (CPL) is a crucial metric that helps businesses measure their marketing campaigns' effectiveness in generating leads. CPL is calculated by dividing the total cost of acquiring new leads by the number of leads generated. This metric is particularly valuable for businesses that want to optimize their marketing spend to maximize return on investment (ROI). Marketing teams can segment CPL by channel. For instance, they may focus on paid advertising and consider only the inputs relating to paid ad costs and leads generated. It's important to always include the right costs in your equation, especially if salaries, creatives, or equipment are the main drivers.

Cost Per Pixel

Cost Per Pixel (CPP) is the average cost of conversions generated through tracking pixels in paid ad campaigns. A tracking pixel is a small piece of code embedded in an ad or webpage that records user behaviour, enabling advertisers to retarget users and measure conversion efficiency.

Cost Per Thousand

Cost Per Thousand (CPM) is the price an advertiser pays for 1,000 ad impressions on a webpage or digital platform. Also called Cost Per Mille, CPM is one of the most widely used pricing models in digital advertising. It measures how much an advertiser spends to reach 1,000 people, making it a standard benchmark for comparing the cost-efficiency of campaigns across channels and audiences.
