EBITDA and Net Burn measure fundamentally different things: one tracks operational profitability, the other tracks cash survival. Understanding the distinction helps you ask the right question at the right time.

The core distinction

EBITDA measures how much a company earns from its core operations, stripping out interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. It is an accrual-based metric, meaning it includes non-cash items and reflects economic activity rather than actual cash movement.

Net Burn measures how much cash a company is consuming each month when operating costs exceed revenue. It is purely cash-based, capturing real inflows and outflows with no accounting adjustments. A company can report strong EBITDA while burning through cash reserves if, for example, customers pay slowly or capital expenditures are high.

That gap is where confusion tends to happen. Both metrics touch on financial health, but they answer different questions entirely.

When to use each

Use EBITDA when you want to assess operational efficiency or compare performance across companies. It removes the distorting effects of capital structure, tax treatment, and non-cash charges, making it a useful benchmark for valuation discussions, lender assessments, and cross-company comparisons. It suits established businesses or those approaching profitability.

Use Net Burn when liquidity and cash runway are the primary concern. For startups and pre-profit companies, Net Burn tells founders and investors how long the business can operate before needing additional funding. It is the metric that answers: "How much time do we have?"

A company in growth mode may deliberately carry a high Net Burn to acquire customers quickly, factoring in customer acquisition cost as part of its growth strategy. That is not a failure — but it needs to be monitored against available cash and projected revenue.

How they work together

EBITDA and Net Burn are most useful when read side by side. A business with improving EBITDA but rising Net Burn may be growing revenue from operations while simultaneously increasing capital expenditures or working capital needs. A business with declining EBITDA and high Net Burn is in a more precarious position.

For investors evaluating early-stage companies, Net Burn sets the timeline and EBITDA trajectory sets the destination. The question is whether the company can reach profitability before the cash runs out.

What is it?

EBITDA is a measure of a company's core operational profitability. It strips out interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization to show how much a business earns from its operations alone, independent of financing decisions, tax treatment, and non-cash accounting charges.

Net Burn, often referred to as Burn Rate, is the amount a company is losing per month as they burn through their cash reserves. It occurs when a company’s operating costs are higher than their revenue. A company that is profitable and generating cash has a "negative Net Burn".

Formula

ƒ Net Income + Interest + Taxes + Depreciation + Amortization
ƒ Revenue - COGS - Operating Expenses + Depreciation + Amortization

Example

A company reports $50M in revenue, $10M in COGS, $15M in operating expenses, $5M in depreciation and amortization, $2M in interest expense, and $3M in taxes.

Net Income = $50M - $10M - $15M - $5M - $2M - $3M = $15M

EBITDA = $15M + $2M + $3M + $5M = $25M

The $25M result represents what the business earned from operations before financing and non-cash charges. An investor comparing this company to a peer with different debt levels or tax treatment can use EBITDA to make a fair comparison.

Using the first method, if a company is spending $250,000 per month to keep the doors open and generating $100,000 in revenue, Net Burn would be:

Net Burn = $250,000 - $100,000 = $150,000
